Week 1: Creation

Picture

Welcome to Lesson One: God Saw That It Was Good! We will begin our course by hearing and responding to the very first story in the book of Genesis. We will reflect on the story of Creation and collect reminders of all the good things God has created in the world!

Here are some materials that you may find helpful to have available for our lesson today:

  • Bible, if you wish to follow along with the story
  • For the Engage the Story activity, you will be collecting things. Be ready to get up and move around!

Please say the following prayer:

O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature: Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share our humanity, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer, p. 288)

Introduction

  • What are your favorite stories or verses in the Bible? Why? (Respond in Chat)
  • Why do you think Christians read and learn about the stories in the Bible? (Respond in Chat)

Genesis Overview

  • What are some of your favorite parts of God’s creation? Why? (Respond in Chat)
  • Try to re-tell the story of Creation in two sentences. What happened? (Respond in Chat)
  • Which moment or part do you most remember about the story? Why? (Respond in Chat)

A Scientific Account

  • Are faith and science mutually exclusive?  Why or why not?

Activity

Make your own collection of items to remind you of all the beautiful things in the world that God created. You can make a snack mix like Victoria does in the video (the recipe is included in the handout!) or collect other things like photos, natural objects from the outdoors, or books and toys that remind you of the different parts of God’s creation. After you make your collection, share with us a picture of what is in it!
